Testosterone Treatment for Women

Testosterone Therapy for Low Sexual Desire

At Westminster Women’s Clinic, our expert Menopause Specialist Dr Anna Cantlay, offers specialist testosterone treatment for women experiencing low sexual desire, also known as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), where this is causing personal distress.

Many women seek advice during menopause or perimenopause because they notice a reduced sex drive, a loss of spontaneous desire, or feel they have “no sex drive” at all, despite otherwise feeling well. This can be unexpected and distressing, particularly when intimacy has previously felt natural or important.

During menopause and perimenopause, testosterone production naturally declines, alongside changes in oestrogen levels. While oestrogen plays an important role in vaginal health and comfort, testosterone is closely linked to sexual desire, arousal, and motivation. For many menopausal women, low libido reflects underlying hormonal changes rather than psychological factors.

Testosterone therapy may be considered for women who are already established on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and continue to experience low libido despite optimised oestrogen treatment. This approach is supported by NICE guidance and international menopause experts.

Some women remain troubled by loss of sexual desire after menopause even when their oestrogen replacement is well managed. In these cases, testosterone replacement may be considered as part of a broader approach to female hormone health, where symptoms align and other causes have been carefully excluded.

Discussing Testosterone at Your Appointment

  • Testosterone therapy can be discussed during routine HRT follow-up appointments.
  • We also offer a separate Testosterone initiation appointment for women who are already stable on HRT and wish to focus specifically on whether testosterone replacement is appropriate for them. This is a shorter 30 minute appointment.

Testosterone treatment is not suitable for everyone and is not offered as a general solution for relationship or wellbeing concerns. It may be appropriate where persistent low libido is causing distress and clinical assessment suggests reduced testosterone activity.

What to Expect from a Testosterone Initiation appointment

  • Consultation (30 minutes)- A focused review of your symptoms, medical history, current HRT, and suitability for testosterone therapy.
  • Blood tests – You may either:
    • Have blood tests taken in clinic to guide your therapy
    • Bring recent results with you (including testosterone and related markers).
  • Shared decision-making – We will discuss potential benefits, possible side effects, and realistic expectations before any treatment is started.
  • Personalised treatment plan – If appropriate, testosterone therapy will be prescribed with clear guidance on use and monitoring.

Follow-Up and Monitoring

  • A follow up appointment is offered at 3 months (in person or video). A repeat blood test for testosterone monitoring is required the week before follow up, either at the clinic or a venue that suits you
  • We assess symptom improvement, side effects, and repeat blood tests where needed.
  • Dosage adjustments are made carefully to ensure safety and effectiveness.

The cost of the appointment is £200 for 20 minutes.
If you have other HRT related queries, you will be required to book a comprehensive Menopause appointment with Dr Anna Cantlay.

Safety and Support

Testosterone is prescribed at female-appropriate doses, with careful monitoring to reflect natural physiology rather than male hormone replacement.

Our focus is always on safety, realistic expectations, and individual response. Many women report gradual improvement in desire, but responses vary, and treatment is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains appropriate.

Our aim is to provide safe, evidence-based, and individualised care, helping you make informed choices about your sexual wellbeing.
