Dr Nhathien Nguyen-Lu is a Consultant Anaesthetist with a specialised interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.

Nat works alongside Miss Jess McMicking as the Anaesthetist for all women whom elect to have a caesarean section for their birth, at both The Portland Hospital and Westminster Maternity Suite.

Nat graduated from medical school at the University of Nottingham and went onto do her anaesthetic training at the Imperial School of Anaesthesia in London. She also completed a research obstetric fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto as part of her advanced training.

Nat works for the NHS at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital (GSTT). Her interest in high-risk obstetrics includes postpartum haemorrhage and is the lead Anaesthetist of the multidisciplinary team for patients with Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) at St Thomas’ Hospital. She helped develop the PAS service at GSTT which is now recognized as an NHS England PAS specialist referral center.

Nat is also passionate about medical education and research. She is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Kings College London, as well as educational supervisor for medical students and senior anaesthetic trainees. She is the director of a national ‘Ultrasound in obstetric anaesthesia’ course held annually at the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Nat is an expert in obstetric anaesthesia and competent in ‘complex’ cases with her proficient skills in the use of ultrasound of the spine for epidural and spinal insertions.
