Genetic Counselling
Private genetic counselling service in West London, Chelsea
At Westminster Women’s Clinic, we fully understand that concerns around cancer risk and family history can feel overwhelming. Many patients come to our clinics seeking clarity about hereditary predispositions linked to breast or gynaecological cancers, and information about what this may mean for their health and their family.
Personalised Genetic Counselling and Assessment
Genetic counselling appointments are led by Monika Kosicka-Slawinska, an experienced Genetic Counsellor specialising in Cancer Genetics. During your consultation, a detailed three-generation family history is taken to assess whether a gene variant causing an increased risk of cancer may be present. While most cancers occur by chance, around 5–10% are linked to a hereditary predisposition, making careful assessment essential.
Where appropriate, genetic testing using next generation sequencing can be arranged through a UKAS-accredited laboratory. Testing focuses on panels of genes associated with specific cancers and genetic health risks. Results are explained clearly in a follow-up appointment, with screening and management recommendations provided in line with NHS and ACGS guidelines.
Ongoing Support and Specialist Advice
Genetic counselling is not just about testing. It is a supportive process designed to help you understand risk, diagnosis, and next steps at your own pace. Some patients attend for a discussion alone, without proceeding to testing.
Our appointments provide clear, balanced information to support informed decision-making, whether your concerns relate to personal health, future screening, or the implications for relatives who may also benefit from assessment.
For patients with an existing genetic diagnosis, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome, appointments are available to discuss risk-reducing options, family planning, and ongoing care.
