Genetic Counselling
Private genetic counselling service in West London, Chelsea
At Westminster Women’s Clinic, we know that there are women who have a family history of breast or gynaecological cancers and would like to discuss this further with a genetic counsellor.
Monika Kosicka-Slawinska our Genetic Counsellor, will take a three generation family history in clinic and discuss with you whether genetic testing a panel of single genes related to specific cancers may be helpful.
Most cancers occur by chance but in approximately 5-10% of cases there may be a single gene cause.
If a patient wishes to go ahead with genetic testing they can request a test in combination with a follow-up appointment to discuss results. Implications of results will be reviewed with the patient and screening/management recommendations will be made in line with NHS guidelines.
We use a UKAS-accredited lab for the testing (next generation sequencing) and patients receive a genetic report which is compliant with the Association for Clinical Genomic Science (ACGS) guidelines.
Monika is also able to offer testing for known gene mutations/variants in families. We would ask to review a copy of your relative’s report prior to the appointment.
If a patient already has a genetic diagnosis of a cancer predisposition condition (e.g. BRCA or Lynch syndrome) they can arrange an appointment with Monika for additional support or advice around risk-reducing surgeries or family planning. We would request a copy of your genetic report to inform the appointment.
Whatever your situation, if you wish to access genetic counselling around familial cancer risk, we are here to support you and look forward to welcoming you to the clinic.
